Artist to Watch: Miguel Arzabe
Art, and a person’s response to works of art, is very subjective - each person has their own interpretation and aesthetics. Each person I attended the Miami fairs with, was excited about such different work but everyone greatly appreciated the opportunity to connect with the artists, many of whom were on-site at the fairs and who were able to share more about their process and journey.
One artist we met, Miguel Arzabe, explained how he was born in St. Louis to Bolivian parents and has spent much of his life reconciling these identities. Taking into consideration indigenous weaving practices of his ancestors, and incorporating modern technology (he uses lasers to cut the strips of canvas), he is blending old and new while considering his past and present.
Miguel makes colorful and dynamic abstractions which are methodically analyzed, deconstructed, reverse-engineered. The work is captivating and was scooped up in the early hours of the Untitled Art Fair VIP opening at the Johansson Projects booth.
