Miami Art Week Guide
Art Basel Miami Beach:
The most well known of the art fairs is Art Basel Miami Beach (ABMB) which takes place at the Miami Beach Convention Center. It’s a huge fair and could easily take you multiple days to explore. Tickets are being sold exclusively online here in advance of the fair (tickets will not be available for purchase at the fair, only online).
Did you know there is a fun special area just for kids? RSVP is required.
VIP preview for ABMB is Tuesday, November 30 and the Vernissage is December 1 with public days opening Thursday, December 2 through Saturday, December 4 (note, the fair will not be open on Sunday, as in previous years). Booths to check out include Miles McEnery, David Castillo, Parrasch Heijnen, Adams and Ollman, Broadway Gallery and Various Small Fires.
Art Miami:
Art Miami is another huge art fair which takes places across the causeway at the Pavilion at the One Herald Building and the VIP opening is November 30 with opening days for the public on Wednesday, December 1 through Sunday, December 5. Tickets are available here. Booths to check out include Maune Contemporary, Simon Breitbard Fine Arts, and Zemack Contemporary. Sister art fair, Context, is right next door.
Untitled Art Fair:
Untitled, which is a favorite of the art world, is opening November 30 - December 4 (VIP preview starting November 29) and will take place at 12th Street and Ocean Drive. Some galleries to check out are David B. Smith, Fredericks & Freiser, Johansson Projects, and Nancy Littlejohn; be sure to also look out for an installation by Miami-based artist Joyce Billet in the Special Projects section.
NADA:
Another favorite of art world insiders, NADA, will be opening December 1 - December 4 at Ice Palace Studios (VIP preview is the morning of Wednesday, December 1). Booths to check out include: 80m2 Livia Benavides, Friends Indeed Gallery, KDR305, and Miami favorite, Nina Johnson. Creative Growth, an art center in Oakland that supports artists with developmental disabilities, will also have a booth there.
Scope:
Celebrating 20 years in Miami, Scope returns to it’s location on Ocean Drive at 8th Street. VIP Preview is Tuesday, November 30 with public days December 1-5. Tickets available here. Favorites from SCOPE include Fabien Castanier Gallery, Gallery 1202 and Seizan Gallery.
Other fairs happening concurrently during ABMB include Design Miami, PINTA, Aqua Art Miami, Ink Miami, Red Dot Miami, Spectrum Miami and others.
Museums and Gallery Exhibitions:
As I mentioned in last month’s newsletter, Miami’s galleries and museums show their most anticipated work around this time. Some exhibition highlights include Spinello Project’s Bernadette Despujol’s show (I Love You, Man), the Betye Saar installation at ICA, the Alex Israel show at the Bass (a collaboration with Snapchat), and the Caroline Larsen show at Mindy Solomon Gallery. Finally, the Rubell Collection will show the work of their 2021 Artist-in-Residence Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe.
Restaurants:
Some of my favorite restaurants on Miami Beach include Blue Ribbon Sushi, Milo’s, Abbale and Call me Gaby; the Rubell also has a great Spanish restaurant on-site called Leku. Reservations are required everywhere during this season in Miami so when you make a plan for your art fair visits, be sure to make your reservations too.
