As spring arrives, it brings with it a renewed sense of creativity and inspiration.
My work allows me the privilege of spending time with artists, and I am constantly amazed by their sense of wonder, curiosity, and determination. Just as an artist’s work ethos is admirable, the homes of artists, filled with the art they choose to live with, are also a source of endless fascination.
Above, the New York City home of artist couple Rashid Johnson and Sheree Hovsepian is a testament to how art can transform a space. Johnson's approach to collecting art is deeply personal, as he describes it as "my way to unpack my relationship with history through objects."
I recently spoke with artist Ron Chen, who shared his insightful perspective on living with art. Chen believes that "living with art is a matter of connection and chemistry, similar to a connection with a person. You connect with an object because you gravitate towards a certain energy which charges your home and in turn your life."
Chen's home reflects this philosophy, featuring artworks from artist friends swapped over the years and a cherished piece by Purvis Young. While Tel Aviv is home, Chen currently lives in Park Slope with his wife, Noam, as he nears the completion of his MFA at New York Studio School.
I am excited to announce that Chen's first US solo exhibition, Eternal Window, will open in Miami on March 27th and run until April 17th (by appointment only). To celebrate the opening, which is on March 27th (from 6-9pm), noted chef Olivia Ostrow has crafted a unique menu inspired by Chen's ethereal paintings at her restaurant, Ostrow Brasserie, located adjacent to the exhibition. The dinner event has limited capacity, so please reserve your spot via Resy. Our other neighbor, multimedia artist Joyce Billet, will also keep her atelier open late that evening which should make for a wonderful night.
For a glimpse into the making of this exhibition, enjoy this behind-the-scenes video. I look forward to sharing these captivating artworks with you in the coming weeks and hope to see many of you during the opening. Stay updated on Eternal Window and future projects by following me on Instagram.
