Summer Exhibitions Guide
With summer approaching, I compiled some interesting exhibitions from around the world, worth seeing. Here they are, organized by city:
Aspen: Florian Krewer, Everybody Rise at the Aspen Art Museum. Krewer is known for his surreal representations of humans and animals in cityscapes.
Basel: A comprehensive solo exhibition of the work of internationally acclaimed Colombian artist Doris Salcedo at Fondation Beyeler.
Dallas: Exploring various generations of artists who have worked in Kineticism, this exhibition demonstrates the lasting legacy of Kinetic art.
Hamptons: A fire station-turned-church-turned-museum dedicated to the work of seminal light artist Dan Flavin.
London: The Design Museum is currently showing a major Ai Weiwei exhibition; the showstopper is a giant recreation of Claude Monet’s Water Lilies made from Lego (pictured above).
Los Angeles: Keith Haring’s Art is for Everybody is showing at the Broad. Known for his iconic characters and linework, Haring’s work continues to be relevant over 30 years after his death. The show will feature immersive elements, such as a gallery lit by blacklight with music playlists created by the artist himself.
Miami: ICA Miami has multiple shows worth seeing over the summer, including Claire Tabouret: Au Bois d’Amour, Denzil Forrester: We Culture, Aglaé Bassens: Emptiful and Avery Singer: Unity Bachelor.
New York City: It’s all about the women artists this Summer in NYC: GEGO at the Guggenheim, O’Keeffe at MOMA, Cecily Brown at the Met, and Aliza Nisenbaum at the Queens Museum.
Paris: Between 1984 and 1985, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol created around 160 paintings together. Keith Haring who witnessed their collaboration, would go on to speak of a “conversation occurring through painting, instead of words.” Basquiat x Warhol, currently at Fondation Louis Vuitton is the most important exhibition ever dedicated to this extraordinary body of work.
San Francisco: Frank Bowling: The New York Years captures the significance of the formative decade (1966-1975) when Bowling, who was born in British Guiana (now Guyana), moved from London to New York and came into contact with a vibrant and tumultuous art scene, with abstract painting on the rise.
Tel Aviv: Giacometti, Beginning Again is a comprehensive examination of Giacometti’s oeuvre.
Tokyo: The Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo will have a large-scale David Hockney exhibition.
Rome: Niki de Saint Phalle’s fantastical Tarot Garden, located 1.5 hour drive from Rome, is an immersive and extraordinary experience.
