NYC Fall Fairs
Kids are back to school and fall is approaching, which means the art world is gearing up for the big New York City art fairs which start the first week of September.
Here’s what you need to know about the fairs:
The Armory Show is coming back to the Javits Center (429 Eleventh Avenue) with a VIP Preview on Thursday, September 8 and public days September 9-11. This year’s theme is LatinX artists, and as a proud Puerto Rican with family ties to Cuba, I am thrilled to see the fair shed a spotlight on artists with a connection to Latin America.
Independent 20th Century will take place at the Battery Maritime Building at Cipriani South Street (10 South Street) with a VIP Preview on Thursday, September 8 and public days September 9-11. This is a new iteration of Independent, with a focus on giving attention to artists from the 20th century who may not yet have gotten their due.
Art on Paper, which focuses on all types of works on paper including drawings, prints and photographs, and has a similar schedule, with an opening on the evening on Thursday, September 8 and public days September 9-11.
Spring/Break Art Show returns for it’s ten year anniversary and will take place at 625 Madison Avenue from September 7-12. This fair is known for pushing boundaries and showing the latest from emerging artists, around a particular theme; this year’s theme is Naked Lunch.
Whether at an art fair, a gallery or at auction, if you are thinking of buying art, I highly recommend reading this article, which highlights five top tips for new collectors. And of course, don’t forget, that many times, artwork is pre-sold in advance; this is something that I do often for my clients, so that they are able to see and acquire artwork, before art fairs and exhibitions open to the public.
